What’s the playlist of your life?

I have put to paper four novels and each one has a very specific playlist. (See Thad & Eva’s below!) It wasn’t intentional. The songs just made their way into the story to reflect a character’s attitude, a feeling, or as a way to put into words something the character couldn’t even identify or say on their own.

Songs…lyrics…music… have a way of doing that, reaching us the way a physical touch or a whisper from a loved one can.

My characters are proving they have very different tastes in music, again not intentional. And so, for the book I’m writing now, I looked up what one’s favorite style of music says about them. I know my searches on the internet weren’t all true, scientific research, but the findings were interesting!

I LOVE rock music. I tend to lean heavily on alternative (I was a teen in the 90s after all) but really I love it all- heavy, soft, 80’s Big hair bands, classic, folk, southern… My itunes library consists of two things. Rock music and worship music- which usually has enough guitar, drums, and keys to satisfy my rock needs.

So what does this say about me? Well, numerous articles of “research” contradicted one another, but the general consensus says I have an “intense and rebellious” music style. This means I should be a gentle, curious, creative, risk-taking, athletic or active, intelligent person (or see myself that way) with low-self-esteem.

The funny thing is I am quite a few of those things. I would say I’m gentle- I HATE confrontation. I make up 86,000 word stories in my head, so I’m doing okay when it comes to creativity. My numerous different careers over the years show I’m a bit of a risk-taker. I am NOT athletic but like to live a relatively active life. I do love to workout and sweat to heavy rock music at least. My grades back in school and my desire to learn mean I could pass for intelligent in a conventional way. I do think I had low self-esteem as a child, but feel that’s not an issue any longer. Adulthood fixed that problem…

Strange and true!
